Who Do You Think You Are?

In the last few years, DNA testing has become accessible for most people. Ancestry.com currently has 3 million paid subscribers, and over 10 million people in its DNA network. People (myself included) are eager to research family trees to find out their heritage. There are television shows such as, “Who Do You Think You Are?” and “Long Lost Family” that help individuals trace family lines.

As I watch “Long Lost Family,” there is often an adopted child looking for family members. One of the most frequently heard statements made by the child is, “I just want to find someone who looks like me.” Those who have been adopted want to be connected with people who have the same appearance or mannerisms. They want to know who they are, from where they came, and to whom they belong.

I have found several things in common with those who search for their “long lost family.”

  • I have also been adopted (Galatians 4:4-5).
  • I have a Father who wants me as His daughter (2 Corinthians 6:18, Galatians 3:26).
  • I want to belong and connect with my Father (Romans 8:14-17).
  • I want to look like Him (Ephesians 5:1).
  • When others see me, I want them to identify me as His child (Romans 8:16, 1 John 3:1).
  • Because of the relationship with my Father, I have an inheritance (Romans 8:17).
  • My Father wants me to come home (John 14:2, Philippians 3:20).

While my earthly parents have now passed away, I’m certainly not orphaned, abandoned, or alone. I have a Father who loves me, wants me as His child, and wants me to live with Him forever. Because I have a Father who adopted me, I know exactly who I am, who I look like, and who will always take care me (Hebrews 13:6; 1 John 4:19). And not only has He adopted me, but He’s always willing to adopt more children. I’d love to have more brothers and sisters!
